Junip is the band that José González is in. They have a new album coming out in a couple of weeks, “Fields”, that I am currently listening to through an NPR stream. I find González’s solo work a little too quiet so I like the more guitar’d sound of Junip. González’s voice is as good as ever, though.

Anthem Moonlight Ride is August 21st

I am sad that I can’t make it to the Moonlight Ride this year. We’re going on vacation later than normal and I’m going to be out of town. Emma and I had a terrific time last year and if you’re in Richmond and have a kid to make the ride with I can’t recommend it more highly. It’s well-run, safe and riding your bike at night is a cool thing to do.

Dalek (James Marshall)

I’m a super-nerd for Dalek’s work. Something about the rigid geometry and the way the colors are sorted makes me happy. I bet this mural is bonkers in person.

James Marshall (Dalek) (interviewed) will be exhibiting his 37-foot continuous wall mural, “Chaos on the Edge of Reason”, with the kicker being that pieces of the painting will be cut out and framed on demand for attendees to take home at $200 per square feet (2×2, 3×3 and 4×4 feet).

Mountain Man is a group of 3 women who sing a capella (or minimally accompanied) American-style folk songs. Think, “Down to the River to Pray” by Alison Krauss from O, Brother Where Art Thou. I have an unabashed love for this kind of music when it’s done right, and I think this is done very, very well.

“Buffalo”, “Animal Tracks”, and “Sewee Sewee” from the forthcoming album Made the Harbor, probably out on July 11 from Bella Union.

The Last Detail

I read Easy Riders, Raging Bulls a couple of months back and now I’m working on filling in some of the holes in my 70′s films knowledge. The Last Detail is a sort-of road movie starring Jack Nicholson and Randy Quaid (23 in this movie, but he looks 18).

It’s quiet and mumbly like a lot of 70′s movies, but I liked it well enough. Nicholson’s moustache is World-Class, too.
