Greatest Moments in Sport poster show

Gallery 1988 is showcasing these ridiculous prints at a show highlighting great moments in sports. This is a wonderful confluence of my love of sports with my love of screenprinted posters. I’ve cropped out a couple of samples below but you should really click through to see these in full-size and the rest of the offerings.

Even if I can’t get my hands on one of the posters, a couple of these will make awesome iPhone wallpapers.

‘CephaLovePod’ by Phineas X. Jones

It’s everything you could ask for in a Valentine-themed screenprint of an octopus on an harpoon.

CephaLovePod

Mine was delivered last night and it’s very nice in person. PXJ does nice work. You can get one here.

Asterios Polyp

I’m an old fan of David Mazzucchelli from back when he used to draw Daredevil. He stopped drawing comics a long time ago but came back this year with Asterios Polyp (amazon link), a fully-formed graphic novel and one of the best books I’ve read in years. It takes a little work to follow, but the rewards are many both visually and plot-wise. Some of the things Mazzucchelli does in here are really revolutionary for this medium but the visual tricks only help tell the story. They never distract.

I’ve never read Pynchon or Gaddis or Updike, so I can’t speak to those comparisons, but I also can’t recommend this more highly.

Stray Toasters

I didn’t read Bill Sienkiewicz’s Stray Toasters back when it was new (1988!) but I grabbed a copy of the recent re-issue of the collection. I’m a longtime fan of Sienkiewicz’s painting and there are enough full-page paintings in here to make the purchase worthwhile for me. The story (serial killer, electronic weirdness, the grip of madness) is decent if a little tough to follow at times

It’s visually impressive, but I’m not going to call it a must read.

“The Killer” by Jacamon & Matz

I spent some time this weekend reading all 10 issues of “The Killer” by Jacamon and Matz. It’s a French comic and the translated issues have trickled out over the last couple of years. I bought and read the first two and enjoyed them enough to stay on board for the whole thing. I didn’t read any past those two issues, though, because these things usually read better when you can knock them out in one bite.

I don’t know if something was (literally) lost in translation, but the promise of those early issues didn’t pay off over the rest of the run. It started as a kind of introspective twist on the loneliness/breakdown of a hitman but just fell apart into bad cliché and muddy plot points. I don’t know if there were bits edited out or whatever, but the whole thing kind of fell apart for me. Oh well. At least I waited 3 years to get them all together…

“Just don’t tell him what he can’t do…”

$50, on sale here.

In celebration of LOST’s final season and as a project of fan appreciation, 16 top designers and artists, who are also fans of the show, were commissioned to create artwork celebrating one of the series’ most memorable, and unforgettable, “water cooler” moments. This ultimate “fan art” was then turned into labor intensive, hand-pulled screen prints, limited to an edition of just 300, with less than 200 available to the public through our websites.

New prints from Dan at Crosshair

crosshairDIY

I am always impressed by Dan McAdams‘ ability to turn his photographs into screenprints. I have a couple and the level of detail he is able to achieve in just 4 or 6 colors is kind of nuts. Add in the fact that I am a nerd for “modern ruins” and his work is right in my wheelhouse.

He has a bunch of new prints for sale in his store and they’re worth checking out.

Nice new bike-themed screenprints

Poster Cabaret has a new series of bicycle-related screenprints. These are nice.

$30 apiece or $100 for the set of 5. I’ve been on a bit of a poster binge lately so I can’t pull the trigger right now. On the off chance these are around for a couple of weeks I will definitely revisit. Especially that Jay Ryan. Excellent flames.

[like I got this anywhere but OMGPosters]
