You can tell I was working hard. I’ve never looked that good in a bike jersey, thanks for the photo P.D.!

Pedal Power is a non-profit group I work with to promote energy conservation with a bicycle-centric angle. We host an annual event where pairs of cyclists compete to see who can generate the most wattage. That’s where I am in that photo up there. We take the electricity generated, charge batteries with it, and power griddles to make lunch for the riders. It’s a way to draw a direct line between effort and electricity.

In addition to the annual event, we set up at community events throughout the year where we do things like power a DJ setup at a pool party or run the cotton candy machine at a school carnival. We try to get attendees on the bikes in an effort to get them see how tough it is to really make electricity.

As a group, we’re only a couple of years old but I think we have a good idea and we’re moving in the right direction.

I set an alarm the other night and I got up at 3am with my oldest daughter to look at the Lunar eclipse. it was kind of a big deal since it fell on the same day as the Winter Solstice.

I took a photo:

The positive response to this photo surprised even me, so I took the plunge and opened my own cafepress.com shop, with this as my maiden image. I know it’s way too late for anything to happen for Christmas, but if you are in the market for a new coffee mug (or a wall clock or a bumper sticker) to commemorate this historic eclipse please consider my humble offerings.

This could be the start of something big.

I missed this last week when it all blew up, but the Underbelly Project was an installation of murals and graffiti in an abandoned (or never opened) NYC subway station. The guys that organized/curated it invited a host of street art folks to come in and put work on the walls. The idea was to create a hidden and relatively inaccessible gallery since the location they chose was illegal to be in and dangerous to get to. It’s an interesting idea since one of the points of graffiti is to get your work or your name in front of as many people as possible.

The New York Times ran a story on the Project on Monday without giving any specific details as to where the station might be, at the request of the curators. The internet being how it is, the location of the station was all over the place by Monday afternoon. There is an okay video of the installation at the NYT but you should definitely look at the NYT slideshow. There is also a gallery of photos at Bury Me In Brooklyn after lot of the work had been tagged.

I took this picture on my way home the other night. Richmond, Virginia has plenty of pickup trucks and plenty of aftermarket mod guys but it’s rare to see this combo. I mean, I get this kind of rim on a later model, with a clean wax job and ground effects and crap like that. I don’t like that stuff, but I understand.

But on an otherwise stock-looking 70′s pickup this looks bad and wrong.
