Think, “Down to the River to Pray” by Alison Krauss from O, Brother Where Art Thou. I have an unabashed love for this kind of music when it’s done right, and I think this is done very, very well.

“Buffalo”, “Animal Tracks”, and “Sewee Sewee” from the forthcoming album Made the Harbor, probably out on July 11 from Bella Union.

Michelle and I caught Elvis Costello and the Sugarcanes over the weekend. We’re both fans of EC’s catalog and the show fell on our wedding anniversary so it was a nice night out. The good news was that he played really well. The Sugarcanes are a country band so it wasn’t necessarily what some folks might have been expecting but all of the players were top-notch.

He played a couple of his hits rearranged country-style (which worked really well), some good covers (Femme Fatale, Friend of the Devil), and what I assume had to be a lot off of his new album. As good as the band was the crowd was as awful. It was embarrassing how many people were talking the whole time. Not just in between songs, either. They were talking over the music. It was like a bad day at Innsbrook After Hours; drunk 40-somethings hammering beers and talking like it was a happy hour with a $50 cover. We were both disappointed in that.

The Soft Pack doesn’t have much going on their own site, but there are a lot of good youtube clips available to get a feel for how they sound. These are both from their latest record, “The Soft Pack” and it is gooood.
