Nice 6 #16

More of what I have been listening to. It’s been re-issue heavy around here what with the Beatles catalog getting a much-needed refresh and the Stone Roses hitting me out of left field with the 20th anniversary remastering of their debut album. Don’t sleep on that Amanda Blank while you’re enjoying the British guitars, though. The 80’s Minneapolis homage is irresistible. Don’t even try.

This is where the downloading happens.

1) Yo La Tengo – Here To Fall
2) The Beatles – Tomorrow Never Knows
3) John Carpenter – Seasons
4) Black Tambourine – Pack You Up
5) Stone Roses – Waterfall
6) Amanda Blank – Make Up

Playing catchup on the movie front.

I Love You, Man” – I like Paul Rudd and Jason Segel a lot and they came through for me in this one. It wasn’t jam-packed with jokes like The Hangover, but there were one or two that had me hitting pause to compose myself. I am also an unapologetic Jaime Pressly fan. It’s an easy six wolfs.

Smart People” – This was not a good movie. It had people in it I generally like, but there just wasn’t anything here I would say I enjoyed. Two Wolfs.

Nick And Nora’s Infinite Playlist” – I was surprised at how much I enjoyed this. I am super-skeptical when it looks like a movie is engineered for my demographic but Michael Cera and Kat Dennings were so disarming that the engineering became invisible and I was able to just enjoy the movie. It’s light but it’s good and Bishop Allen showed up in the middle. Proper. Six solid wolfs.

“The Killer” by Jacamon & Matz

I spent some time this weekend reading all 10 issues of “The Killer” by Jacamon and Matz. It’s a French comic and the translated issues have trickled out over the last couple of years. I bought and read the first two and enjoyed them enough to stay on board for the whole thing. I didn’t read any past those two issues, though, because these things usually read better when you can knock them out in one bite.

I don’t know if something was (literally) lost in translation, but the promise of those early issues didn’t pay off over the rest of the run. It started as a kind of introspective twist on the loneliness/breakdown of a hitman but just fell apart into bad cliché and muddy plot points. I don’t know if there were bits edited out or whatever, but the whole thing kind of fell apart for me. Oh well. At least I waited 3 years to get them all together…

Bullhorn pepper and some Polyface eggs

Bullhorn pepper.

It’s a good day when you can grab something from the yard and make it breakfast. This guy was 10 minutes from “growing in the sun” to “on my plate”. I know that’s the way people have eaten forever but I just can’t get over the novelty of it. I geek every time.

Bullhorn pepper with some Polyface eggs.

That’s a slice of Norwood Cottage bread. Oh golly those are good.

Carmelized onions on baguette slices with Parmesan-Reggiano.

(I’ve been inspired by Ben Frank’s I Ate That! blog to photo up some of the more interesting food adventures We have here at Chez Falfa. His pictures are great and are totally worth checking out.)

Carmelized onions. the best.

This is dead-simple and a household fave. Into the pot go 3-4 chopped onions. Don’t dice them, just some rough chopping. You can put a little olive oil in, too. Set it over a medium-low heat and wait. Eventually they break down into this rich deliciousness. It takes a couple of hours but it’s so damn good and completely worth the wait.

Onions in play.

We slice up a baguette and brush some oil on both sides of the slices, spoon onions onto each slice, and then drop some Parmesan-Reggiano on top. The pieces go into the oven on a cookie sheet until the cheese melts and the bread browns just a bit. They’re delicious.

Sue Richards by Rockin’ Jellybean

RJB Sue

This is a genuinely unusual collaboration. Rockin’ Jellybean (NSFW) is a Japanese illustrator and poster artist who does a lot of, um, suggestive work in highly 70’s-influenced style. Kind of a mashup of Archie comics, hot rod magazines, and Cherry Poptart . It’s really well-done but not the exactly the kind of thing I could hang around the house. Because it’s dirty.

I don’t have any idea how he got tapped to interpret the ladies of the Marvel Universe in vinyl, but I would bet that now that Marvel is owned by Disney this little venture is getting nipped in the bud.
