Caught an early-afternoon screening of Kung Fu Panda with the kids yesterday and I thoroughly enjoyed myself. I had 4 or 5 legitimate, out-loud-laffs.
Jack Black (as Po, the panda) and Dustin Hoffman (as Shifu, his master) have some terrific back and forth. I definitely got the impression that they were enjoying themselves. A. Joile (as Tigress) was a non-factor, in my opinion, because her character was so minor. David Cross’ voice was kinda distracting as the Crane, but only because the Crane didn’t have Tobias’ sweet-ass moustachio.
All of the kung fu looks very good. You see the whole fight scene instead of relying on quick cuts and camera angle changes to make it look fast (like a ton of shi-ty Hollywood movies). They based the animation on good source material and it really shows.
This is, by far, my favorite of the Dreamworks animated movies. I think they rely too much on cheeky pop culture references and kick-in-the-nuts humor and their movies just aren’t as good as what Pixar has to offer. Kung Fu Panda has an obligatory groin shot it’s the exception rather that the rule here. I’d take my kids back to see this one just so my wife can watch it, and so I could catch the scene after the credits (hint, hint).
