Apple/EMI smelling the coffee.

In a press release full of good news, this is the part I like the best: “Apple will allow customers to upgrade songs that were already purchased on the old format.” That has been my biggest beef of any songs we have bought from the iTunes Music Store. The DRM has also been a pain in the ass but it was something I could work around in a pinch. The sound quality problem, however, was unfixable.

Other reported highlights:

  • many (most) of EMI’s songs will be for sale online free from copy protection software
  • higher bitrate quality songs will be available for download for a $.30 premium
  • high-quality songs will be encoded at 256kbps instead of 128kbps used for the standard songs
  • albums with high-quality audio will remain at the same price as the current albums
  • I still have to see what the eligible portion of the EMI catalog has to offer but this is a positive move, IMO, for the iTMS.

Nice to see that, about the free upgrades. That’s huge for me. 128kbps is the reason I stopped using iTunes Music Store.
