August 2006

My bad.

It looks like that great Calvin and Hobbes page I linked to earlier this month got most of his images from this guy, who has an insane collection of Watterson-related memoribilia.

My dad spotted this at a 7-11 on Staples Mill Rd. in Richmond. Good eye, Pete!

Poppa Palpatine!

Poppa ain’t happy when Darth calls him up to break the news about the Death Star.

This is one of the funniest things I’ve seen on the internet in a while. Holy crap. I guess this whole ‘Adult Swim’ thing is worth checking out.

New ink

I got my old Mr. Excitement tattoo cleaned up. It was originally pretty shoddy and had faded a bunch since I got it, like, 12(!) years ago.

And since I was already in the chair I got two new stars, one for each of the little stars in my life, one of whom you can see in the background there.
Jason down at Trademark Tattoo did a great job.

TrueHoop on William Wesley

TrueHoop is a terrific NBA blog that is a must-read even for a just-more-than-casual NBA fan like me. Henry Abbot is plugged into the league and he’s a good writer, plus he reads a ton of baskeball blogs so he’s always got good links.

Today’s post is all about William Wesley. Unless you’re a TrueHoop reader that name probably doesn’t mean anything to you, but Abbot started digging in January and the complete of William Wesley is getting clearer:

“You can see it in pictures for yourself online. There he is: arriving late at night at a hotel in Shanghai with Allen Iverson, helping to break up the famous Piston-Pacer squabble in Auburn Hills, and in snappy formalwear arm in arm with the birthday boy at LeBron JamesÂ’ 21st.

He has a clean-shaven head, a ready smile, and an appearance that has been compared to a grown-up Urkel.

His name is William Wesley, and for more than a decade it has been something of an open secret in the NBA that he is about as connected an NBA insider as there has ever been.”

‘SNL’ turnover

The NY Post (with a terrible photo of Amy Poehler) says that 4 current cast members are getting fired, that Seth Myers is going to replace Tina Fey (who is leaving to work on her new show ‘30 Rock’), that Rachel Dratch is leaving (also to work on ‘30 Rock’), and mediabistro is reporting that Chris Parnell and Horatio Sanz are two of the four getting the axe.

Michelle and I have been really enjoying SNL for the last couple of years. It’s an easy Tivo and this cast has been a lot funnier than they get credit for. For me, Horatio Sanz has been kind of skating along ever since Jimmy Fallon left. I still think he’s very funny but it might be time for him to move on. If Chris Parnell gets fired I will be bummed (well, as bummed as you can be about this kind of thing). I think the guy is really, really funny. And not just because of the “Chronic-les of Narnia” thing. He really makes me laugh in those Ozakrs Emergency Room sketches.

Dan the Automator doing the NBA2k7 soundtrack

360 Fanboy gave my morning a boost.

I actually bought the soundtrack cd for 2k6 because of who was on it. Some of the songs got corny with the video game shoutouts but the talent on board (Aesop Rock, Lyrics Born, RJD2, Skillz) was impressive. So if 2k7 sucks I will still take a look at the soundtrack. The Automator is egg-cellent.

I am looking forward to having a good basketball game for the 360 and I hope 2k7 fits the bill. All of the new round of 360 sports games should be more tuned to the strengths of the machine instead of being weak ports from the previous-gen systems.

New Pernice Brothers pre-order now available

The new Pernice Brothers album, “Live A Little” is now available for pre-order at the Ashmont Records store. All pre orders will get a special second disc of demos and alternate mixes. Sounds like a deal to me.

And I am definitely pre ordering this one. I slept on it last time and missed out on the Rob Ullman comic that was included.

You have a little time, since the deadline for ordering “Live A Little” with the bonus CD is September 22, but don’t wait too long, okay?

Favorite Seasons from the avclub.

Here is an interesting conversation starter. The Onion AV Club lists their favorite seasons of their favorite show that are available on DVD.

My thoughts on their list:

  • I preferred ‘Sopranos’ season 1 over season 3, mostly because Livia Soprano made me so damn mad that it had to be great television.
  • And I think I might be in the minority with the opinion that the post-Shelly Long ‘Cheers’ was better. I enjoyed Sam more while he was struggling with not owning the bar and I preferred Woody to Coach (I know, stirke me down).
  • And season 1 of ‘Alias’ is still one of my favorite seasons of tv, ever. The whole thing was so cool back then which is easy to forget given how terrible that show got starting in season 3.
  • And for the record, ‘Lost’ season 1 is the best season of television I can recall seeing. There were some great runs in ‘Sienfeld’ and ‘The Simpsons’ but nothing has had me glued to the tube like ‘Lost’. Fact.
