I’m a big fan of Wes Anderson’s movies in general but this one didn’t do it for me.
I thought there were some very funny bits. The scene where Jeff Goldblum hits the 3-legged dog for no real reason was funny and Angelica Huston, who I normally don’t care for, was wickedly funny as Zissou’s current wife. I also love how Wes Anderson’s movies look. All of the washed-out blues with sharp stabs of orange and yellow and bright green were perfect. I even bought the stop-motion fish and other animals, they were hokey but I gave Anderson the benefit of the doubt on them.
The story just didn’t grab me. Owen Wilson’s accent was distracting, too.
Oh! I almost forgot. The shoe-whore in me loved the Zissou model adidas ROM. Too bad they never made them.

Yeah, this movie was just an incoherent mess to me. I thought The Royal Tennenbaums was a mess as well, but it held together with it’s nostalgiac sombre feel that Anderson pulls together so well. Zissou was like a *drumroll* fish out of water. A few funny bits sure, but just quirkiness for quirkiness’ sake. No point to it at all. A dissapointment.

i disliked it as well. I wonder if writing partner Owen Wilson might be the missing ingredient.

That’s exactly the point a lot of people have made about why this one didn’t catch people the way Rushmore or Royal Tennenbaums did.
I just think people’s expectations have gotten higher regarding his work.
Didn’t care for it that much either.

This one didn’t even come close to the genius that was Rushmore. I think the Royal Tenenbaums somewhere in between. I agree that Owen Wilson is much more valuable when writing than “acting.”
