Is newsprint dying?

It’s funny. I read Wired.com on my Clie just about every day (using AvantGo). I’m also a huge fan of the magazine. For a measley $12/year, it’s a monthly shot of cool tech news, fun gadgets, and generally neat things. Wired makes me feel smart and always has a handful of things that I want to show Allison right away (like last month’s internal images piece).

So what’s funny? I generally only read the “culture” stuff on Wired.com. I go to a tech news site to read about culture.

From a tech perspective, I guess. In today’s Media Hack column, Adam Penenberg worries for the future of print newspapers. It seems The Washington Post held some focus groups to investigate why the oh-so-coveted 18-to-34 year olds aren’t reading newspapers. This shouldn’t be a surprise to you… I mean, you’re reading a blog. And look, I just linked to the newspaper’s website. To loosely summarize, he posits that the young’uns…

  1. Don’t like the newspapers piling up. He swears he’s not making that up, but that makes perfect sense to me. I think the under-40 set are a lot more eco-conscious than their parents. I know I hate the pile of Posts every week. And so much of it is unread. I wish I could order a print newspaper a la cart. A NYT front page, a Post politics section, a USA Today Life section, etc. I could do without classifieds and Metro.
  2. Don’t believe you should have to pay for news. And when the stuff online is more immediate, it really doesn’t make sense to buy a paper.
  3. Seek out news that suits their tastes and beliefs. Personally, I think this is the dangerous part, because if you seek out news that only agrees with you, then you’re not really learning.
  4. Create a custom news experience.

All this leads me to think that I need to get an RSS reader for my Clie. I’m missing out. anyone know a good one for Palm OS 4?
