Moneyball

Moneyball cover. I just finished Michael Lewis’ latest book, Moneyball. I’ve always been a baseball guy so I got excited when I learned that the author of one of my favorite books about the industry I work in (Liar’s Poker) was writing a book about baseball. Actually, it’s not so much about baseball as it’s about Billy Beane, the General Manager of the Oakland A’s baseball club, and his ‘New Thinking’ approach to player evaluation and acquisition

I manage a fantasy football team so the idea of player evaluation isn’t something that’s totally foreign to me. Yeah, it’s on a much smaller scale and it’s a different sport, but it’s evaluation nevertheless. I was facinated by the application of simple math to the evaluation process and at how well that application worked. I’m curious to see if something similar could work in fantasy football.

I guess I need to do some work on that…
